Michael Ashton: Adele’s Make Up Artist

2nd December 2015

Last week Adele’s latest album, 25, finally dropped. To celebrate, Superdrug recently caught up with Michael Ashton: Adele’s Make Up Artist!

They grilled him on everything from his go-to look for party season to the products he thinks everyone should own. Oh, and they found out exactly how he creates that iconic feline flick…

Superdrug asked Michael what beauty products every girl should have in her make up bag. Michael said: “Everyone should have a good multi-purpose pawpaw balm, a facial repair serum and mascara. I love Nanogen Root Boost Hair Thickening Spray too. It’s my go-to product when I need to create instant added volume. It’s something I never leave out of my kit.”

And how do we create that cat-flick eyeliner that Adele’s so famous for? Michael divulges: “Product ‘cocktailing’ is key. I start by outlining the shape of the liner, working from the inner to outer corner of the eye with a gel liner right into the root of the lashes, and then gradually build thickness. Once I’ve created the shape, I use a waterproof liquid liner with a precision tip to intensify and refine the line. Then I finish by winging the end of the liner for a perfect tapered point.”

Superdrug quizzed Michael about his best make up tip. He said: “Use false eyelashes! It’s a beauty industry secret that every woman should know about. Coming in every shape and size, they are a quick-fix trick to giving your eyes that Bambi effect that any Bond girl would be proud of.”

And finally, Michael waxed lyrical about the go-to beauty look for the party season: “For me, it’s about not being afraid to combine strong lips and eyes. I’m not recommending it for a casual day look, but it can be a fantastic, modern take on old-school Hollywood glamour, especially if you add glittering eye textures and some well-placed gloss to make it more current.
