Garden Square is Choc-A-Block With Fun!

30th July 2015

In 1975, Garden Square Shopping Centre was born. Built in the centre of Letchworth, it conveniently connected other parts of the town via its cruciform designed walkways; Commerce Way and Central Approach. It was designed as a modern and open single level shopping precinct, as well as providing the benefit of a car park.

Over the past 40 years the centre has evolved and is considered the town’s premiere shopping destination, housing a wide range of national and local retailers including the likes of Argos, Boots, New Look, The Body Shop, Costa Coffee and Iceland.

Turning 40

To celebrate Garden Square reaching its 40th year, a Willy Wonka themed extravaganza hit the shopping venue on Saturday 25th July! The party was choc-a-block with free fun and frolics for the whole family to enjoy, including:

The Mouth-watering Marquee

For a small donation to the Garden House Hospice, party goers could enter the Mouth-watering Marquee where they could dip sweets into chocolate fountains and drink lemonade from the Fizzing Station.

Chocolate Craft Workshop & Willy Wonka Hat Making

Little ones could take part in two craft workshops, where they decorated sweet treats and made head-turning Willy Wonka style hats.

Face Painting & Sweet Selfie Booth

Revelers had their faces painted, grabbed some props and then entered the Sweet Selfie Booth! The photos from which have been uploaded to the Square’s Facebook page where people can vote for their favourite in order to win £100! The competition concludes on Monday 3rd August.

There were also guest appearances from The Giant Candy Canes and The Oompa Loompas, as well as the chance to win various golden ticket prizes throughout the day.

Flocks of shoppers made the event a roaring success with a significant increase in footfall from the previous Saturday and the same Saturday in 2014.

“Garden Square has seen many changes over its 40 year history and it was great to see so many local people coming to the Square to help us celebrate with our Willy Wonka themed birthday party. It was a day filled with treats, fun and celebration. Thanks to everyone who came along and we’d also like to thank all our loyal shoppers for their 40 years of custom and friendship.”
