Fairtrade Fortnight

1st March 2016

Fairtrade Fortnight takes place from 29th February to 13th March and is an annual promotional campaign, organised and funded by the Fairtrade Foundation to increase awareness of Fairtrade products. Volunteers get involved who support the goals of Fairtrade, but who are also committed to the more general concepts of fair trade, ethical trading or concerned by development issues.

Fairtrade Fortnight Fairtrade Breakfast

Fairtrade Breakfast

As Martin Luther King famously said: “Before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half the world.” For example, maybe this morning you enjoyed coffee from Kenya, bananas from Columbia, cocoa from Cote d’Ivoire, tea from India, sugar from Malawi or juice from Brazilian oranges.

The challenge from the Fairtrade Foundation for Fairtrade Fortnight this year is to inspire a multitude of Fairtrade Breakfasts in your community – and wake up others to the challenges facing farmers and workers.

This will not only mean more Fairtrade sales for producers, but also spread understanding that we can support hard-working farmers and workers to put food on their table – by choosing Fairtrade all year round.

Bring the Big Fairtrade Breakfast to your Community!

There are three simple steps to get involved – organise, inspire and register! There’s nothing to stop you doing them all, or adding your own ideas.

  • Organise – organise your own Fairtrade Breakfast
  • Inspire – inspire others to host a breakfast (for example in a school workplace, town hall or at home)
  • Register – be sure to make your Fairtrade Breakfast count by registering it on the Big Fairtrade Breakfast totaliser at fairtrade.org.uk/breakfast
What counts as a Fairtrade Breakfast?

Each person that eats one Fairtrade foodstuff and drinks one Fairtrade beverage qualifies as part of the Big Fairtrade Breakfast. It could be at any time of the day. For example, you could sit down with a bowl of Fairtrade muesli and a cup of Fairtrade tea in the morning at home or have a coffee break with Fairtrade chocolate muffins at work or grab a Fairtrade banana and Fairtrade orange juice at lunchtime – they all count, so long as they are registered at fairtrade.org.uk/breakfast
