Pancake Day

20th February 2017

Flip, flip hooray – it’s nearly Pancake Day! Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday and is the perfect opportunity to dig out your mixing bowl, whisk and frying pan to whip up a pan-tastic feast for the whole family.

Shrove Tuesday

Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting. On Shrove Tuesday, Christians would go to confession to be ‘shriven’ with the intention to absolve their sins.

Prior to this, a bell would be rung to call people to confession; this being known as the ‘pancake bell’. Shrove Tuesday falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, this means that the date of Pancake Day varies each year. In 2017 Pancake Day will fall on Tuesday 28th February.

Pancake Day traditionally marks the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the fasting for Lent, and pancakes prove the perfect way to use up such ingredients. A pancake is a thin, flat cake made of batter and then fried in a frying pan.

The English pancake is very thin, served immediately once cooked and then filled or topped with either savoury or sweet ingredients. Lemon and sugar or syrup are the preferred choices.
