The Third Place

8th January 2018

Garden Square is delighted to welcome the newest tenant to the shopping centre – The Third Place. The Third Place will be located at Eastcheap House, Central Approach, Letchworth, SG6 3DL.

Opening on Thursday 11th January, the venue enables people to work, meet and connect. It provides office space, as well as hot desking, conference, meeting and training facilities.

Ray Oldenburg

Ray Oldenburg is an American urban sociologist known for writing about the importance of informal public gathering places for a functioning civil society, democracy and civic engagement.

He coined the term ‘third place’ and is author of books Celebrating The Third Place and The Great Good Place, which was a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice for 1989.

Oldenburg suggests that public places such as streets, pubs, cafes, shopping centres and other ‘third places’ are the heart of a community’s social vitality and the foundation of a functioning democracy.

They promote social equality by levelling the status of guests, creating a habit of public association and offering psychological support to individuals and communities.

The Third Place at Garden Square

Home workers are starting to realise that working by themselves is more isolating than they first thought, and office workers are questioning the need for a fixed routine.

The Third Place was created to bridge that gap. From flexible work spaces through to modular meeting spaces, everything they do is about putting you in the most productive frame of mind and helping your business to grow.

The Third Place Launch Event
