There’s plenty going on this Halloween in Letchworth. From our free Monster Mitts craft workshop on 31st October to live music and trick or treating to spooktacular shows.
However, this time of year you sometimes want to curl up on the sofa with a good movie. With so many great Halloween-themed films, you could be there for a long time!
Fortunately, CeX in Garden Square has got you covered, with a great selection of new and pre-owned DVDs and Blu-ray Discs.
Here are our five favourite Halloween movies for kids and grown-ups:
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Can’t decide whether you want a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? Don’t worry – Tim Burton’s got it covered! This creepy stop motion classic tells the story of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, as he stumbles through a portal to Christmas Town and discovers a whole new world.
It’s a great family movie with exquisite songs from Danny Elfman, and Henry Selick’s unique animation is truly timeless.
Well, of course this made it onto our list. Halloween isn’t just a horror classic; it’s possibly the most influential indie film of all time. The movie charts the life of Michael Myers, who stabs his sister to death at the age of six and returns to his hometown the night before Halloween to seek revenge after 15 years in an institution.
Halloween singlehandedly turned the slasher into a successful genre, while launching the careers of John Carpenter, Debra Hill and, of course, Jamie Lee Curtis. The movie spawned an incredible seven sequels, a 2007 remake, and a 2009 sequel to the remake. Pick up the original for a night of horror, or marathon the lot.
Nearly two decades after the release of Halloween, Scream arrived and caused the slasher genre’s second renaissance – not to mention the revival of horror. A subversive take on the high school movie, Scream tells the story of a group of friends plagued by strange phone calls and a serial killer in a terrifying white mask.
It was unique (at least, until its three sequels). Still, the first two movies are cult classics, and Ghostface is one of the most iconic villains of all time.
A Nightmare on Elm Street
This 1984 classic will have you wondering what’s real and what’s not. Starring a very young Johnny Depp, A Nightmare on Elm Street tells the story of several teenagers who are stalked and killed in their dreams by the terrifying Freddy Kreuger and his mittens of doom.
Scooby-dooby-doo, where are you? The retro series charting the adventures of the Mystery Gang is a children’s TV classic, and kids are still watching it to this day. There are dozens of series, movies, spin-offs, and even a live-action remake – and whichever you choose, you can’t go far wrong. Children have loved Scoob his friends for nearly 50 years.
