The Weston Group of Artists: Art Exhibition

9th October 2019

The Weston Group of Artists are running their annual pop-up art exhibition at Garden Square Shopping Centre until 9th November. Their work is currently being displayed at 23 Commerce Way; this is located next to The Body Shop.

A Creative Community

The Weston Group of Artists are a group of painters who came together over a decade ago to form a creative community. They have been meeting weekly ever since. During their meet ups they work, exchange ideas, enjoy refreshments in a mutually supportive and congenial environment, and they do like to chat too! They sometimes invite tutors along to their meetings, to learn new techniques and to broaden their knowledge. They predominantly work in oils, but occasionally use other media such as acrylics, pastels, and watercolour.

Their weekly meetings are held in St Ippolyts, near Hitchin but in the past, they occupied premises in Weston – a name they have retained as a legacy not only to their early days but as a tribute to the place where their original idea to have an annual exhibition was born. The membership, which is very informal, shares any costs equally on an ad hoc basis as and when needed.

The members have exhibited their work widely, both in Hertfordshire and as far afield as France and New Zealand. They host annual exhibitions at Garden Square Shopping Centre in Letchworth, and have also exhibited at The Mardleybury Gallery in Datchworth. One member was honoured to be selected to exhibit at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition hosted at Burlington House, Piccadilly, in London.

The 8th Annual Exhibition

This year marks the 8th Annual Exhibition of The Weston Group of Artists, the 4th at Garden Square. The exhibition, that opened on Saturday 5th October, runs until 9th November. The exhibition is open all day on Fridays and Saturdays, 11am to 3.30pm on Sundays and some weekdays. Opening hours and the next opening day are displayed at the entrance to the venue each day.

Cathy, one of the members of the group, says: “I can’t believe that this is our 8th exhibition, the 4th in Garden Square. Setting up an exhibition is always hard work (as is the work that goes into the paintings) but we are rewarded by the fact that it is so great to be able to exhibit our work to the public and it is absolutely thrilling when someone likes your work so much that they are prepared to hang it in their own homes”.

Jack Philbin, Garden Square Shopping Centre Manager, adds: “We are thrilled to have the group back again exhibiting their amazing work with us. Letchworth has some amazing artists and we are pleased we can give them a platform to showcase their talent. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to vote for their favourite piece so be sure to pop in and have a look when you are in town. 160 people came to the exhibition when it opened on Saturday 5th October.”

Most of the works at the exhibition are available to purchase and several of the artists offer print reproductions and cards.
